If you were God and you wanted to send one of your servants to help the less fortunate in the world, how would you train your servant for this task? Our ways are not God’s ways. We find an interesting story in the case of Brigid, a woman born in the early 400’s in Ireland.


Brigid was born from a sexual encounter between an Irish king and one of his slaves. She was raised as a slave girl within the king’s household and was required to perform hard work on the king’s farm. From the beginning, Brigid took notice of the plight of the less fortunate. She would give the butter from the king’s kitchen to working boys. She once gave the king’s sword to a passing leper-an act about which the king was enraged. The king tried to marry her off, but to no avail. One day, Brigid fled the king’s house and committed herself to belonging only to Christ.

Freedom and Boundaries

Now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” – Genesis 3:1


God is big on giving man freedom and boundaries–freedom to manage what He has entrusted to us, boundaries to protect us from evil. The boundaries in the Garden of Eden were not set for the purpose of limiting Adam. Man got into trouble when he questioned those boundaries. God had provided everything he would need for life. He also entrusted man with responsibility to manage and work the Garden. God gave him freedom in that responsibility. God knows we were made to express ourselves creatively through our work.


Each of us must have freedom and boundaries in our work life. Whenever you are hired for a job, you must have the freedom to make certain decisions. You must have the authority to manage things within your area of expertise. You must also have limits within your area of responsibility. You need to know where those limits are and stay within them. Both freedom and boundaries are always under the umbrella of God’s authority and our authorities at work.

Daardie twee kruise simboliseer een van God se grootse geskenke – die geskenk van keuse. Daar was baie ooreenkomste tussen die twee misdadigers – hulle is vervolg deur dieselfde sisteem, veroordeel om op dieselfde manier te sterf, deur dieselfde skare omring, en albei het ewe naby aan Christus gehang. Verder was albei aanvanklik ewe smalend, albei het wrede goed vir Jesus gesê. Maar die een het verander. Hy het gesê: “‘Jesus, dink aan my wanneer U in u koninkryk kom.’ Jesus antwoord hom: ‘Ek verseker jou: Vandag sal jy saam met My in die paradys wees,'” (Luk 23:42-43). Terwyl ons verheug is oor die dief wat tot bekering gekom het, mag ons nie vergeet van die een wat nie tot bekering gekom het nie. Daar is tye in ons lewe wanneer God donderweer stuur om ons te laat wak kerskrik. Daar is ook tye wanneer God sy seën stuur om ons nader te trek.

“I was a pastor for 19 years before I went into business,” said the man sitting across the table from me as we were sharing lunch together. What led him from being a pastor to a businessman was both a move of God and an attack from the enemy.


“I was a pastor of a particular denomination that did not embrace all of God’s Word. It was a time in my life when I was experiencing many physical problems. I was on the verge of being admitted to the hospital. I had been seeking God about whether He was truly a God of healing and whether His Word was applicable in all areas of life as it was in the early Church. I was to go into the hospital the next day. That night I cried out to the Lord. I confronted God about His Word. I asked Him if He still did miracles today. Just then, I turned on my TV and saw an evangelist preaching. At that very moment, he stopped preaching, looked into the TV camera, and said these words: ‘There is a man in the viewing audience who has been a pastor for many years and is struggling to know whether God heals today. His own denomination does not believe He does. [He even named his denomination.] God is healing you right now to demonstrate to you that His healing is for today, and you are to know that His Word is true for today just like it was for the early Church.’ “

RKDit was ‘n doodgewone dag vir Moses, totdat hy die brandende bos raakgesien het – iets wat nie ongewoon was in die snikhete woestyn nie, behalwe dat hierdie bos aanhou brand het. En, “toe … hy nuuskierig nader kom, roep God na hom.” Jy sal van jou grootste Geestelike ervarings in die middel van jou alledaagse lewe ervaar – mits jy oop is vir ‘n Goddelike onderbreking in jou dag.

In Lukas 10 het Maria Jesus se geestelike natuur bedien terwyl Marta Hom na sy menslike natuur bedien het. Maar Marta se onthaal skedule het dit amper onmoontlik gemaak om haar te onderbreek, terwyl Maria moontlik so geestelik ingestel was dat sy selfs vergeet het om die stoof aan te sit! Beide is nodig om ‘n balans te handhaaf.

PaderewskiI am impressed by an incident that happened during Ignace Paderewski’s career. The famous Polish pianist agreed to play a concert organized by two Stanford University students working their way through school. Paderewski’s manager said they would have to guarantee the artist a fee of $2,000. The boys agreed and eventually the concert was held.

Though the two student promoters worked hard, they took in only $1,600. Discouraged, they told Paderewski of their efforts and handed him the  $1,600 with a note promising to pay him the balance of $400. But the  artist tore up the note and gave them back the $1,600. “Take your  expenses out of this,” he said, “give yourselves each 10% of what’s left for your work, and let me have the rest.”

 Some people seem to get worked up easily about things that are either largely irrelevant or incidental, or that they do not really understand. This seems to be the case with some religious folk when the topic is an aspect of Christianity that is personally important to them.

For example, around Christmas each year there are always those who loudly decry the use of the abbreviation “Xmas” as some kind of blasphemy against Christ and Christianity. This concern has been elevated recently with the public debates about manger scenes and the substitution of “holiday” for Christmas in stores and government venues.  Among religious folks, the objection to Xmas is usually along the line that people have taken Christ out of Christmas and replaced him with an unknown (since the Greek letter chi, [C,c] which looks like the English letter x, is the symbol for an unknown quantity in mathematics).

Werk 80% van die dag aan iets waarmee jy goed is. Werk 15% van die dag aan iets leersaam en werk 5% van die dag aan iets waarmee jy swak is. Is dit wys? Absoluut! “Ons het genadegawes … volgens die genade wat God aan elkeen van ons gegee het.”Wat gebeur wanneer ‘n span se lede ‘uit hulle posisie uit’ speel?

Eerstens, die moraal verswak, omdat die span nie op hulle beste kan speel nie. Diegene wat op die verswakte gebiede moet speel voel gegrief, omdat hulle nie hulle vaardighede ten volle kan benut nie. Binnekort wil die span nie meer saamwerk nie, begin daar krake vorm in elkeen se selfvertroue en word die situasie net erger.

The God of the Valley

Whenever we stand on the mountain, we are able to see clearly. It is the best vantage point to see what lies ahead. Wouldn’t it be great to live on the mountain all the time in order to anticipate what is ahead? God allows us to experience the mountaintop at times. Joseph’s first mountaintop experience was as a young man. He had the favor of his father, Jacob. He was given a fine coat and even had a dream about his future. As a young man, Joseph had a sense of destiny about his life. God often gives us a picture of our future so that we will remember this picture when we are being tested to trust Him in the valley. This picture usually does not reveal how God intends to bring about the visions for our life.
