Tommy’s Faith
Tommy was employed in a large machine shop working a milling machine. He was a new Christian amongst a group of hostile, foul mouthed and abusive workers. His new found faith soon became the object of cruel… jokes from this abusive bunch.
Tommy announced that he was going to a Christian men’s retreat over the weekend — this only fed the ugly bunch. He left work Friday to hoots of, “Don’t forget to bring us a Bible on Monday.”
Tommy had a wonderful experience at the retreat but the question kept ringing in his ears, “Don’t forget to bring us a Bible on Monday.
Tommy asked at the retreat what he should do. He was afraid if he brought a Bible to work he would be ridiculed out of the machine shop. Or someone would just throw the Bible in a dumpster.
After receiving advice from others and praying about his situation — Tommy decided to trust the Holy Spirit to handle the situation. He resolved to bring a Bible to work Monday morning as requested.
Two hours on his machine and it was time for a break. Tommy moved to the break room and the laughter and taunts began. He sat still for a few minutes and just listened. Then Tommy rose to his feet — he removed a brand new Bible from his bag and placed it on the end of the table.
Silence fell over the crowd and Tommy said, “I did not forget to bring you a Bible.” He sat down and conversation slowly resumed in the crowded room.
The Bible sat on the end of the table untouched for several weeks — a testimony to his witness. The taunts and laughter stopped.
The Bible eventually disappeared and Tommy through his quiet witness had won the respect of his fellow men. Without uttering a word he had let the Holy Spirit handle the situation.
