Do the next thing

family1905

family1905In one of Bill Keane’s Family Circus comic strips several years ago, the yard is filled with children playing for all they are worth. They are playing as only children can play. The air is filled with noise! They are yelling and singing and blowing horns and crying. The dog is barking, a jet flies overhead, and two boys are tossing a baseball back and forth-not very quietly. One boy is flying a kite, while two others are swinging on a rope from a tree branch.

Inside the house, the mother of one of the children says to her husband with alarm, “Listen! That’s PJ crying!”

With all that noise, PJ’s mother heard him crying, because her ears were conditioned to listen for the sound of his voice. How many of you mothers and fathers have experienced the same thing?

All around us there are many things clamoring for our attention. The world shouts, screams, yells at us in order to divert us. And we become so wrapped up in our own little worlds that we many times fail to hear a lost person crying for help, or crying that he or she needs to know the Savior. We don’t even hear them. And we don’t hear them because we are not burdened enough.
