This place in Uzbekistan is called by locals “The Door to Hell”.
It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place started 35 years ago when geologists were drilling for gas. Suddenly during the drilling they found an underground cavern, which caved in. This was so big that the whole camp site with drilling equipment fell into it, deep under ground. No one dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. They ignited it to prevent poisonous gas escaping from the hole, and since then, it has been burning continuously for 35 years. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be an infinite source of natural gas.
