The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it is safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged co-worker of mine, when she asked if I knew what the buzzer was for.
I explained that it signals to blind people when the light is red.
She responded, appalled, "What on Earth are blind people doing driving"?!
Wet Paint
When I worked for the security department of a large retail store, my duties included responding to fire and burglar alarms. A side door of the building was wired with a
security alarm, because it was not supposed to be used by customers.
Nevertheless, they found the convenience of the exit tempting. Even a sign with large red letters, warning "Alarm will sound if opened," failed to deter people from using it.
One day, after attending to a number of shrieking alarms, I placed a small handmade sign on the door that totally eliminated the problem. It said "Wet Paint."
Pie for Dessert
In a country home that seldom had guests, the young son was eager to help his mother after his father appeared with two dinner guests from the office.
When the dinner was nearly over, the boy went to the kitchen and proudly carried in the first piece of apple pie, giving it to his father, who passed it to a guest. The boy came in with a second piece of pie and again, watched his father give it to a guest.
This was too much for the boy, who said, "It's no use, Dad. The pieces are all the same size."
